FORD-BASIS CYCLING TEAM TAKES THREE WINS IN TWO WEEKS

The Ford-Basis team capped off its best month of racing since the teams inception three years ago.

Lead by Chrissy Ruiter, the Ford-Basis women brought home three wins in the last two weeks.

Chrissy rode to victory in the Mt. Hood Prologue, in Hood River Oregon, marking the first win for one of the teams developmental riders. Chrissy rode to victory on her 2005 edition JAvelin Arcole TT bike, with Zero brand disk wheel, Rudy Project TT helmets and K-Mart streamers.

Two days later, she sprinted to victory over her two breakaway mates in the criterium, capturing her second win. Chrissy finished up the stage race overall in second, behind Leah Goldstein.

"I haven't won a race since beating my sister to, and subsequently through, a set of mailboxes in third grade. My victory salute this time, was a bit more cautious. "

Across the country, Nicole sprinted for first in the Raleigh Twilight Criterium with the help of teammates Alisha and Lauren who kept the field together. "I usually go to bed by 8:30 pm. I just went as fast as I could so I could get home to sleep… All the cool kids in high school used to go to bed at 8:30 too."

When not racing the Ford-Basis women were actively promoting their sponsors to their target market: elementary school kids.

Inspired students share their thoughts (actual exerpts from students letters)

Voler: Clothing sponsor

"The interesting part was when she showed us the poket (sic) on her shirt. I learned how to go to the bathroom."

Javelin: Bicycle sponsor

"She was very nice. She has a nice bicycle."

Honey Stinger: Nutrition sponsor

"I ate one of those honey things right before lunch. Then at lunch I was scholing (sic) all the boys in basketball, of course."

Potential sponsor, online dating service???

"I am glad she came because she is pretty. I wish she were here all the time."

Ford: Title Sponsor

"Her sponsor is awesome. It was Ford. Ford is the best truck ever. That is why Ford is the best truck and sponsor. I like Ford a lot because it can pull good and it can run like a deer. Back to the girl. I thought she was cool." - future EVP of marketing.

On cycling in general

"She told us how Lance Arm Strong wins."

"I am going to write about what that biker chick taught us. She taugh us about drifting. Drifting is where you stay behind a guy to stay more arrow dynamic."

Special thanks to the Tenace family for hosting 7 Ford-Basis teammates during the Nature Vallegy Grand Prix. The Tenace's have since moved to a multimillion dollar estate in Key West after an unexpected garage sale windfall selling items left by the riders.

INLAND CONSTRUCTION went BACK TO DIRT strong this past weekend. Master sport athlete Bo “the flow” Glenn told his wife that he was heading to Asheville to let his 18-month-old son (and future SES Athlete) spend some quality time with his grandparents. Bo insured, the grandparent-child quality time, by sneaking off to Spartanburg, SC to compete in the Stump Jump - AMBC/South (see photos)

Carolina State Mountain bike Championships. Bo must have ate too much (or too little) of Momma’s cooking. He rode well until the 3rd of three long 9.5-mile laps. Bo slipped off the main group of 6 on lap three and soloed home in 6th place. Not sure if his wife knows what place he got.

Open-Sport-Should-Upgrade racer, Mike Lockhart was not aggressive enough to capitalize on his superior handling skills upon a twisty flat course, which saw the pro riders averaging 15 miles per hour on a course wet from the prior nights’ thunderstorms. IC-BTD’s Lockhart rode his usual consistent style to grab third place.

All of the South’s resident Pro men made their way to Spartanburg to test themselves against the #1 East Coast based Mountain bike team, INLAND CONSTRUCTION-BTD. Training partners for the past 6 years, Charlie Pendry and Charlie Storm are beginning to hone racing fitness for the late summer NORBA Season, and were ready to redeem their lack of bringing home the biscuits, at the first two Southeast AMBC Series events.

Pendry laid it down from the gun, by mid way through lap one he had thinned the men’s field to Pendry, Storm, Kentucky’s Young sensation Anthony Slowinsky, and long time Georgia pro, Andy Johnston. Though the two-mile 4% singletrack climb up from the river, Storm took over and pressed the pace to complete lap one. Pendry drilled the pace again for the next 5 miles, until one small slip up cost him valuable seconds on the fast, tactical course.

Storm went to the front to slow things down, but Pendry was not able to make contact with the lead group again. Storm resumed the pace, dropping his other two adversaries and soloing in alone with the win. Pendry’s hard work paid off with a second place finish after Slowinsky bonked and Johnston’s rim blew up. He may look into DT Swiss Wheels next time.

Rain soaked, twisty course results: Fuji hardtails, Magura Brakes, Python rear, Bulldog front, Shimano Components, and Frank’s Cyclery tuned machines go one-two. Other miscellaneous off-brands and Dual Suspension things, third through last.

4-11-05 KNOBSCORCHER AMBC, BRYSON CITY, NC

The Knobscorcher is perennially the biggest East Coast cross country race
and the most cherished race to win among Southeastern mountain bikers. This
years’ event once again drew large fields, with over 400 riders competing.
BTD’s Charlie Storm was looking to repeat his win from two years ago, but it
was teammate Charlie Pendry who drove the pace the entire day in the 25
rider, Pro men’s field. Storm fell of the main group of 6 riders 45 minutes
nto the race and rode the remainder of the 2 hour 15 minute race alone,
finishing in sixth place.

Pendry controlled a group of 5 Pro riders that included Thomas Turner, AndyJohnston, John Lam and Brian Schworm. Pendry couldn’t shake up the groupenough on the short climbs characteristic of Tsali trails to break it apart.Pendry ended up 4th place in the 5 man tactical battle. Brian Schworm ofBerea KY won the race.

IIn the master’s 35+ race, Rob Moran led his field from the gun and into the
woods. “Wrong Turn Rob”, went right instead of left at the first turn,
relegated himself to last place in the 50+-rider field, and simply chased
his way back to 3rd place. No problem.

Other INLAND-BTD riders competing, but not having their best day were, Mike
Lockhart and Scott Whitworth. Scott and Mike will be resuming their popular
Thursday mountain bike group ride in Cary this week. Their ride last year
usually had 15-20 riders and is expected to continue to be well attended
this year.

Master 50+ expert Chuck Meek, of INLAND-BTD, also competed in the 35 mile XC
race.

Apr 14-17 Sea Otter Classic, Monterrey, CA

Charlie Pendry, Laura Bowles and team mechanic/guru, Frank Jones, will be

attending Sea Otter in California, competing against the best riders in the

world.

Apr 17 Cane Creek/AMBC Series Tiger Rag XC, Clemson, SC

Storm, Scott Whitworth, Rob Moran and Mike Lockhart will be at another

highly attended, southeastern racer favorite.

NORTH CAROLINA CANE CREEK SERIES XC #

Troy, NC:
BTD's Chuck Meek lined up with National Team Rider and 5th place

finisher in last year’s World Championships, Eddie Greene and several other

riders in the 40+ Expert Class at Cane Creek's Uwarhie Cross Country race on

Easter Sunday. Chuck finished the two lap, 16-mile tough course in third

place.

Chuck said that riding his new Mt Fuji Pro "Team Bike" made a difference in

control from the disk brakes and a forgiving fork in the slick technical

sections.

Inland's Laura Bowles placed 3rd in a women's 123 Crit in Arizona. Laura

will be moving back to NC after Sea Otter.

Ford-Basis Earns First International Win

Ford-Basis Women's Cycling Team started the 2005 season on a roll at the Tour of New Zealand, Geelong Tour in Australia and McLane Pacific Classic. The team earned its first international victory with Nicole taking the breakaway sprint to win stage threes Masterton Road Race at the Tour of New Zealand.

Kele Hulser followed suit the next day, taking 4th in the final time trial. The duo finished 11th and 5th respectively in the GC, marking Nicole's best GC finish since the Wheels 'N Tots Kids Fun Ride. Halfway across the world, back in the US, Alisha won a race but is downplaying the international significance of the victory. Chrissy finished 4th at the McLane Pacific Road Race bridging up to the breakaway of three in the final meters of the race.

"What was the promoter thinking making the race 3 laps instead of 3 laps plus 5 pedal strokes? Totally illogical if you ask me. I would have won, you know" noted Chrissy after the race.

The Masterton road race in New Zealand featured wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour. As an American incapable of translating kilometers into any meaningful value, the wind was "wicked fast". Says Nicole, ".. the wind launched me into the air and blew me into a ditch. Another racer flew past, into the fence. Realizing she was stuck and hidden in grass, I immediately popped back on my bike, glad to know I wouldn't finish last."

For the Geelong Tour, racers were housed in mobile homes at Geelong Caravan Park near the river . "Prior to the trip, I looked up the address on the internet and an RV park kept popping up. I thought 'surely the race promoter must be confusing us with the men's pro race'"

Join Ford-Basis for a special march to Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch after the Garett Lemire Memorial Crit in Ojai. Junior racers are discouraged from joining.

From Charlie:

2005 INLAND-BTD-NORBA MUDFEST # 1

NORBA NMBS #1, San Antonio, TX: Charlie Pendry and Charlie Storm have a combined 18 years of experience mountain bike racing in muddy conditions, but the best muddy move by the Inland-BTD racing team this year was the last minute January acquisition of new pro Laura Bowles to the team. Bowles, riding in her first pro NORBA event ever and only her 5th ever mountain bike race, powered through the soggy Texas slop to an unbelievable 24th place finish in the Pro Women’s field.

Official results are yet unavailable. Charlie Pendry suffered through the weekend’s stage race format, covered head to toe, with road rash from the prior week’s meeting with the pavement in a Greenville, SC road race. Pendry was 50th of 75 riders in the Friday time trial and 50th in Saturday’s Short Track race. Pendry was hanging around the same position in the XC race, trying to salvage some series points. Several crashes due to his injuries forced him to abandon after the 2nd of three 60 minute laps.

The champion of last year’s first two NORBA Marathon races, Charlie Storm, competed in the XC stage race this time around. Storm is on a new low mileage “bike shop owner’s” training program and plans to target the later season marathon events. Storm placed 44th in the TT event and 43rd in the Short Track. In the XC Race, Storm was not far from the front, around 20th position near the end of lap one when his old grip shifters when awry. Charlie salvaged what he could, washing his drive train frequently with water bottles, to finish around 40th in the men’s pro XC.

Bowles, Pendry and Team Mechanic Frank Jones will make the trip to the march 18-20 Phoenix NORBA stage race. Look for Bowles to continue to improve with her experience and Pendry to be all healed up for Phoenix.

Mar 18-20 NORBA NMBS #2, Phoenix, AZ
